Upper Cervical Subluxation Complex: A Review of the Chiropractic and Medical Literature states in a review of a research paper by John D. Grostic D.C., “The spinal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve may extend as far downward as the 4th cervical vertebra. By combining anterior rotation of the atlas on the side to which the atlas vertebra has laterally deviated with the lateral traction it may be possible to put traction directly on the sensory nucleus of the trigeminal nerve at the level of the first and second cervical vertebrae”. Simply put, the upper cervical subluxation can compromise the function of the trigeminal nerve causing severe facial pain.
